Chelsea vs Aston Villa Match Preview, Head to Head Statistics & Predictions
The festive fixtures continue on Monday evening as Aston Villa travel to Stamford Bridge after quite an interesting show at Villa park against Crystal Palace.
Successive away sandwich defeats and an impressive 3-0 victory over West Ham on paper, but Chelsea has had plenty of difficulties in that match. In recent weeks, the Blues have suffered their first big slump of the season and Frank Lampard will hope that the loss to Arsenal, in particular, will prove a wake-up call. Lampard’s men may boast some of the top flight’s most expensive attacking assets but Villa haven’t conceded a goal in more than six and a half hours of Premier League football.
Chelsea went on a seventeen-game beaten run in all competitions after suffering a defeat to Liverpool in the second week of the season but earlier in December Everton ended their run with a 1-0 win at Goodison Park, they followed that up with another 2-1 loss to Wolves and most recently 3-1 to Arsenal.
Caesar Azpilicueta, Emerson Palmieri, Kai Havertz, and Callum Hudson-Odoi may all be in line for Monday night’s launch, while Olivier Giroud is also hoping to be off.
Hakim Ziyech was ruled out of Boxing Day’s defeat but could come back here, although the winger is unlikely to be thrown straight back into the starting lineup after his injury.
Predicted Chelsea XI: Mendy; Azpilicueta, Zouma, Silva, Emerson; Kante, Jorginho, Havertz; Pulisic, Giroud, Hudson-Odoi
By comparison, after a resounding 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace, Villa head to Stamford Bridge, with Dean Smith’s side playing the second 45 with 10 men on Boxing Day. Despite being a man down for most of the game, Smith’s men created a truly dominant display in the West Midlands, Bertrand Traore took just five minutes to break the deadlock at Villa Park, but Kortney Hause doubled Villa’s lead before Anwar El Ghazi smashed home to ensure that Dean Smith’s side took the spoils with 10 men.
In five games, the visitors bounced back from four losses to take ten points from their current qlrun of four games. In fact, Villa’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday ensured that, for the first time since December 2009, they retained their fourth consecutive top flight clean sheet.
Predicted Villa XI: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Hause, Taylor; Luiz, Nakamba; Traore, Grealish, El Ghazi; Watkins
Tyrone Mings was sent off the game against Crystal Palace with a red card, he’s set to miss the next three games. Ross Barkley has not fully recovered from a thigh problem while Wesley still remains a long term absentee, Trezeguet also is unlikely.
